Orthodontics
What is an Orthodontist?
An Orthodontist is a dentist who has become a registered specialist in orthodontics (in much the same way a cardiologist is a doctor who has become a specialist in heart problems).
Orthodontics is not just for kids anymore, most of the time there are many different options for all age groups to achieve desired results. The Hills District is privileged to have an array of specialist Orthodontists in the area who are renowned for their expert recommendations and treatment options.
Why should crooked teeth and incorrect bites be fixed?
Crooked teeth are more difficult to brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping. An incorrect bite can result in unfavourable growth and uneven tooth wear. Open-bites can result in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments.
Ultimately, orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile-it creates a healthier you.
Adult Treatment
Orthodontic treatment at later stages in life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint pain.
If you think your child may require Orthodontic treatment, there are a number of important things to think about.
When should treatment begin?
Every child develops at a unique rate. A lot of patients will come to us and it is not uncommon for children to be referred to an Orthodontist when they are still quite young. This doesn’t mean that treatment will begin right away, however getting a professional consultation and observing the developing teeth over time will ensure that when the time does come for treatment the best possible solutions can be achieved.
Do all baby teeth need to be lost before treatment?
Usually Orthodontic treatment will not begin until all the baby teeth have been lost and the adult teeth have fully come through. Some early intervention may be carried out by your Orthodontist to minimize future treatment.
How much is it going to cost?
If early intervention commences at the optimal time, expense may be minimized. Multiple treatment options, health fund rebates and duration of treatment all come into the equation. Your Orthodontist will be able to give you comprehensive treatment plans and sometimes even payment plans.
